Life @ Thammasat for Women – from enrollment until graduation and beyond

Starting from the applications and entry process, Thammasat University has published a notification of policy for women applications and entry “Policy on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination Against Women, LGBT People, and People with Disabilities” addresses in item #6 “Relevant sectors shall develop procedures for admission, scholarship, educational and skill development without discrimination against gender, age, ethnicity and social class. All faculties must ensure that the applicants’ qualifications for admission, scholarship, and educational skill development are not limited by gender.

Similarly, for job postings, the applicant qualification requirements shall specify educational or skills that correspond with the job description, regardless of the gender, age, maternity, physical status, social status, ethnicity, or social class

Women enrollment, access schemes and other outreach programs in underrepresented subjects:

From the year 2019 until 2022, there were 107,969 female students enrolled in the undergraduate and postgraduate degree at Thammasat University which accounted for 64.03% of the total number of students. For the academic year 2021-2022, among 8,747 students starting a degree, 5,736 were women. Similarly, among the 1st generation students starting a degree, 74.78% were women.

Engineers and health science fields are often the subjects that women are underrepresented. The Faculty of Engineer, Thammasat University (TSE), was a pioneer in providing opportunities and promoting diversity and inclusion for women to become successful as much as men in the engineering career.  Nowadays, women represented 35% of all students in TSE.  New fields and curriculums are open to broaden the potential of women engineer by emphasizing more on soft skills and innovations.

Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University, hosted a “Women in Engineering” workshop to encourage women to join SIIT and be successful women engineer.

SIIT, in collaboration with IEEE Control System Society, Thailand Chapter and Srinakharinwirot University Prasarnmit Demonstration School, hosted an online workshop on the topic “The Girl in Control” to provide  the fundamental knowledge of engineering concepts. The primary target group is female high school students and students who have studied the basic principles of control engineering through the online coding learning via Scratch Program.

Graduation:

Thammasat University tracks the number of graduated students every academic year. For the academic year 2021-2022, the numbers are published in the 2023 annual reports below. Women’s graduated rate were approximately 65.6% of the total graduates (please refer to page 12 of the report).

Mentoring:

Viva City is the center that provides free mental health care and assistance to students who are suffering from psychological problems. The services include medical examination, organizing various activities that help in enhancing skills in handling mental problems, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, student advisors, and career counselors. In year 2022, women represented 76.8% of total visitors.

Maternity and other sexual safety support programs:
Thammasat Maternity and Paternity Policies

Free sexual health care program includes:
1) Free HIV screening by Thammasat University Hospital and Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand;
2) Free condom, lubricant gel, and application brochures;
3) Free teaching materials (i.e. organ model) to educate a proper sexual health education as well as raising awareness through various media on the topics of safe sex, sexually transmitted disease prevention, and unintended pregnancy prevention; and
4) Free counseling services on sexual health through Thammasat Well Being Center Facebook page to provide health care advices and to coordinate and assist the students with sexual health issues.
