Free Sexual Health Care for Students – Promote and Build Understanding of Safe Sex among Dormitory Students

Thammasat University is strongly committed to promoting and safeguarding student sexual and reproductive health through various activities focusing on screening, prevention, education, and clinical services. These initiatives are primarily coordinated by the Thammasat Well Being Center, which was established in 2019, often in cooperation with the Thammasat University Hospital (TUH) and the Student Affairs Division. As part of this initiative, the university launched the “Sex Must Say” clinic since 2022, further enhancing its support for students.

To ensure comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care, here is a summary of the key support activities addressing sexual and reproductive health care for both dormitory residents and off-campus students:

  1. Free HIV Screening: Conducted in collaboration with Thammasat University Hospital and the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand, providing crucial testing for all students.
  2. Essential Supplies: Distribution of free condoms, lubricant gel, and informative brochures to promote safe practices.
  3. Educational Resources: Offering free teaching materials, including organ models, to facilitate effective sexual health education and raise awareness through various media on safe sex, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancies.
  4. Accessible Counseling Services: Students can receive free sexual health advice and support through the Thammasat Well Being Center’s Facebook page, ensuring they have access to the information and resources they need.

Screening, Clinical Services, and Prevention Supplies

Thammasat provides accessible, clinical preventative care, often in collaboration with the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand:

  • Free HIV Screening: The university conducts free HIV screening. Students are eligible for testing twice a year.
  • Normalization and Encouragement: Activities are designed to “Normalize HIV testing”. The messaging emphasizes the importance of early detection and the ability to continue life successfully utilizing anti-retroviral drugs
  • Accessible Testing: Screening events are hosted in locations like the glass room on the first floor of the BR.4 Building at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Students who are unsure, lack confidence, or are uncomfortable are encouraged to seek assistance. Student trainees from the Faculty of Public Health, 4th year, have supported these events.
  • Preventative Supplies: The Well Being Center provides a free condom service throughout the year (“บริการถุงยางอนามัยฟรีตลอดปีด้วยจ้า”). They also distribute free lubricant gel and informative brochures.
  • Clinical Development: The university launched the “Sex Must Say” clinic in 2022. Other noted past clinical efforts include the Health promotion clinic (focused on sexually transmitted diseases), HIV Self-test, and various HIV Screening Projects.

Education, Awareness, and Counseling

The university uses events, committees, and online platforms to deliver education and support:

  • HPV Educational Events: Thammasat University Hospital invited students to attend a specific educational session titled “HPV มันร้าย ติดง่าย แถมมะเร็ง” (HPV is dangerous, easily transmitted, and causes cancer). This event took place on March 29, 2024 (2567), at the Social Sciences Integrated Classroom Building (SC1). The speaker was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Watphol Kunthawatchaichai, Deputy Director of Service at the Thammasat lifestyle and wellness medical center.
  • Educational Materials: The university provides free teaching materials, including organ models, to raise awareness and facilitate effective education on safe sex, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancies.
  • Sexual Safety Committee: The Committee for the Promotion of Sexual Safety and Understanding plays a role in education by installing educational boards on safe sex practices and sexual hygiene tools near common and Mikasa rooms in faculty buildings, accompanied by the provision of free condoms.
  • Comprehensive Education: Educational efforts cover topics such as reproductive health, birth control, rights, and various useful information for teenagers.
  • Accessible Counseling: Students can receive free sexual health advice and support through the Thammasat Well Being Center’s Facebook page.
  • Teen Access: The university supports the Teen Club, which serves as a channel for the general public, especially “teenagers,” to access reproductive health services more conveniently.

By prioritizing these services, Thammasat University is not only fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility but also empowering students to make informed decisions about their sexual health.

The Committee for the Promotion of Sexual Safety and Understanding (Sexual Safety Committee) also plays an important role in sexual health care education. The educational boards on safe sex practices showcasing various sexual hygiene tools was installed near the common room and Mikasa room in the faculty building. This initiative is accompanied by the provision of free condoms in the common room to promote sexual safety and raise awareness of safe sexual practices.
