Thammasat University Notification on Net Zero Emissions Policy, 2565 B.E. (2022)
Thammasat University has been working on achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (17 SDGs) which are the global mission towards sustainability during 2015 – 2030 proposed by the United Nations (UN). The goals correspond with the agreement from the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) of United Nations Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) that aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2030 to decelerate global warming reaching the 1.5-degree threshold.
By virtue of Article 39 of Thammasat University Act, 2558 B.E. (2015), the University designates the net zero emissions policy, as follows:
1. Promote cooperation to prepare for the effects of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions from the activities in the University.
2. Promote reduction of direct greenhouse gas emissions, as follows:
- (i) Increase the efficiency of energy and resource consumption.
- (ii) Reduce the usage of fossil energy source.
- (iii) Perform regular maintenance on cooling systems in the buildings.
- (iv) Promote and support the use of low emission transport routes, such as footpaths, bicycle lanes, and on-campus electric shuttle buses.
- (v) Promote the development and improvement of low-emission transport routes both on campus and in the vicinity.
3. Promote the reduction of indirect greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption, as follows:
- (i) Increase the proportion of clean energy usage, which is an energy source that does not create pollution or direct greenhouse gas emissions.
- (ii) Increase the usage of renewable energy to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
4. Promote the reduction of other indirect greenhouse gas emissions, as follows:
- (i) Improve the waste treatment efficiency and promote Zero Waste to Landfill.
- (ii) Develop efficient water and wastewater management as well as increase rainwater collection and the use of recycled water.
- (iii) Increase the use of eco-friendly products.
- (iv) Create eco-friendly activities and operations in the University.
- (v) Renovate or construct buildings taking into account the Green Building design to reduce electricity and fossil energy usage.
5. Promote greenhouse gas removal, as follows:
- (i) Increase green space to at least 20% of building space.
- (ii) Increase the number of trees in the vicinity area outside buildings.
This policy shall be effective henceforth.
